I read the response from City Attorney Jim Goza in The Herald, Sunday October 19.
I beg to differ with Attorney Goza, Brownsville is not the only International Seaport in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
The Port Isabel – San Benito Navigation District is indeed a government entity with statutory taxing authority. Perhaps the reason Attorney Goza is not aware of that fact is that, because the Port Commissioners and the Port Director, Bob Cornelison, operate the Port efficiently and have not burdened their constituents with additional taxes to this point.
They should be commended and serve as an example of the novel concept, of a government entity working within their means.
Perhaps, just as important, is that the individual with the responsibility for advising the city relative to its legal issues did not take the time to research the circumstances before he made an official comment under his official title. It makes me wonder what other positions he has advised on, with similar preparation.
Because Mr. Uresti is not an elected official in a position to know all of the governmental machinations, he can only ask questions and pose assertions based on his observations, to seek real answers and resolutions.
I do not often agree with him politically, but I do applaud his initiative and community concern. I only wish there were more like him in all political corners. It certainly appears that they are needed when the credibility of most influential officials can so easily be called into question.
