I recently attended a meeting of the South Texans for Good Government and was positively impressed with their good intentions for the community.
It appears that there is a genuine desire accompanied with considerable effort to inform themselves and the community about the political processes so that proper decisions can be made about voting and other actions to be taken with regard to the political process.
It is a shame that the legislators and the bureaucracy seek to discourage the individual from even understanding the laws, the proposed laws and the propositions in the coming elections.
In the reading of many of the propositions in the coming election, and the explanations of those issues, few were able to grasp exactly what was being said. Some present were able to cast some light on the subject but only because they had considerable experience with the particular issue or the bureaucracy involved.
If this is a country “of the people by the people and for the people” why can’t the people (even well educated ones) understand the language of the law of the land.
Could it be that there really is an “elite” ruling class, who feels they are the only ones who know what is good for us, and then makes us pay for it? It would seem to me that this was the reason the that the United States came into being. Taxation with no say in how the money is spent.
Both the Republicans and the Democrats are telling us, by this silly power struggle in Austin, that elections are predetermined by the setting of election district borders; but they still asking us to vote.
I think we can look to California where the vast majority of people finally got “fed up” with the status-quo and initiated a process to fire the governor, who only one year ago seemed to represent the interests of the majority. Now less than 25% say they believe he is competent enough to stay in the job. Not crooked just incompetent. The process may be right or wrong, but it is definitely a sign that the people will only tolerate lack of respect for so long.
I believe it is definitely time that we rethink what is important to us and take an active part in the political process, it would appear that both the traditional parties, are controlled by professional bureaucrats, intent on grasping more power, not citizen statesmen, as was envisioned by our forefathers.
They are letting us down and need to change or be replaced
